Bipap machine

Bipap, also known as Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure, is a machine used to temporarily support patients who have dyspnea or difficulty of breathing. Bipap machine is used to provide oxygen and pressure for patients to ease their breathing. The Bipap machine works by applying air pressure to the patient’s lungs as he or she breathes out. This allows the lungs’ air sacs to be opened, making air flow in to the system. The Bipap machine is a small gadget respiratory machine that is connected to a tube and a facemask (See Figure 1) (ICU-USA, 2004).
Bipap machine is a non-invasive tool, meaning no surgery or tubes are required to go though the patient’s body. This makes the Bipap machine different from other similar gadgets like the respirator and ventilator, where tracheostomy, a process that requires a surgical opening in the patient’s windpipe or trachea, is necessary. A flexible tube is connected to the mask, covering the patient’s nose or mouth and nose. A Bipap machine can be used to immediately assist patients with breathing difficulties; hence, it can act as a first aid. It can also be used for patients who do not want to go through surgical operations or use a ventilator.
