Satellite navigation more commonly known as sat-nav is considered as luxury which comes as standard in the Rolls-Royces of the mobile and cellular-phone world - but even if you fork out for one of these deluxe and elite models parked here, you'll need to custom-tune it yourself. You really need some skills and potentials to buy a GPS mobile and stick it on the dash.
Many mobile phones and handsets ship with satellite-navigation software which has been designed and generated for finding addresses, not navigation - so to actually use it on the road, you will be needing someone in the passenger seat moving the map around and reading out some directions - just like using an atlas, only fiddlier. Proper satellite-navigation software normally entails a download and/or a subscription, which you can buy up to £100 a year - a little steep when you can get satellite-navigation for as little as £50.
But thanks to some manufacturer for making some sat-nav affordable. For each mobile phone unit model, we have found the best, the cheapest and most affordable software, including voice- guided navigation - an important given how small phone screens look on the dash.
Note that features such as live traffic updates can give you extra cost and even the best phone software is not as good as a dedicated sat-nav as well. Get a car charger before setting out, too - GPS software entails you to need extra battery or an on-the go charger.
These are the discovered mobile phones which can access GPS and sat-nav.

Screen 3.2in

The fully featured, voice-guiding CoPilot software is also available for the excellent G1 phone. As with the iPhone, it costs £26 (alk.com/ copilot).

3. SONY ERICSSON W995
sonyericsson.com
Screen 2.6in
Software Wayfinder Navigator
Comes with a three-month trial of the Wayfinder software, featuring voice guidance. After that, prices start at around £35 a year - city guides, traffic info and speed-camera warnings cost you extra. Ask your network for details.
VERDICT: 3/5
4. BLACKBERRY CURVE 8900
uk.blackberry.com
Screen 2.4in
Software BlackBerry Maps
The free BlackBerry software isn't designed for cars, and you'll have to pull over to check the visual-only directions. Thankfully, the excellent Telmap Navigator software is just £40 from BlackBerry's App World.
VERDICT: 3/5
5. NOKIA N96
nokia.co.uk
Screen 2.8in
Software Nokia Maps
The chunky N96 includes Nokia Maps for free, although voice-guided navigation - essential for keeping your eyes on the road - will cost you £99 for a year. On top of that, the handset is a little cumbersome for in-car use.
VERDICT: 2/5
6. SAMSUNG TOCCO ULTRA
samsung.com/uk
Screen 2.8in
Software Google Maps
The Tocco Ultra manages to combine style and substance with its big, responsive touchscreen. It comes with Google Maps, which is good for planning, but not when you're driving. Download the free amAze GPS software instead.
VERDICT: 3/5
7. SONY ERICSSON W715
sonyericsson.com
Screen 2.6in
Software Google Maps
Wayfinder Navigator (around £35 a year; see the W995, above) transforms this relatively averagelooking phone into a competent guide. With no touchscreen, it's an affordable but imperfect alternative to dedicated sat-nav.
VERDICT: 2/5
8. HTC HERO
htc.com
Screen 3.2in
Software Google Maps
Slick and smooth, the Hero looks the part, but entering addresses on the touchscreen can be fiddly, and sat-nav isn't its best feature. Upgrade options are the same as for the similar G1 (which benefits from a slide-out keyboard).
VERDICT: 3/5
9. NOKIA N86 8MP
nokia.co.uk
Screen 2.6in
Software Nokia Maps
Like Apple's 3GS, the N86 has a compass, but watch out for the limitations of Nokia Maps (see the N96, above). With just a ten-day trial for voice guidance, you'll soon be forking out the extra £99 for the full year's licence.
